Winning and scoring

Scoring in Mexican Train is refreshingly simple: the dots left in your hand count against you, and the lowest total wins. The app adds everything up for you — here’s what it’s counting.

How a round ends

  • Someone goes out — a player plays their last domino.
  • The game blocks — the boneyard is empty and nobody can play.

How the round is scored

  • The player who went out scores 0 for that round.
  • Everyone else counts the dots (pips) on the dominoes still in their hand.
  • Those points are added to a running total across all the rounds.

Some games add an extra penalty for being caught holding the 0-0 domino. That’s the double-zero penalty, a game rule the host picks when creating the game (anywhere from 0 to 50 points, 0 by default). You can see what your game uses under Game Settings in Game scores and settings.

How the game ends

The game finishes once you’ve played the agreed range of rounds — 12 down to 0 by default, or a shorter run if your host chose one.

The winner is whoever has the lowest total score across every round. You can check the running standings at any time from Game scores and settings in the in-game menu.
